Description
Bridge Cottage is a former toll house built in 1877. It served as a toll house for the nearby Axmouth Bridge, which was designed by Philip Brannon and was the first concrete bridge constructed in England. This small, single-storey toll house is made of mass concrete and features a smooth render that simulates horizontal rustication. The roof is tarred and has a segmental arch shape, with the eaves extending over the roadside to create a canopy supported by large brackets. To the right of the entrance, there is a splayed bay, and the central doorway is flanked by two casement windows on the rusticated right and left return elevations. A chimney stack is positioned over the segmental gables. For further reference, see E de Maré's book, The Bridges of Britain, page 215.
