Description

The Acland Memorial Cross, built in 1873, is a granite cross located 240 metres north-west of Killerton House. It was erected in memory of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and stands on a prominent site overlooking the Culm Valley. The names of the subscribers, who were significant social and political figures from Devon at the time, are inscribed on the plinth. This cross is a variant of the Celtic cross type, featuring three steps that are octagonal in shape, which support a tapering square plinth that bears the inscription. The rectangular shaft is decorated with vine and abstract designs, has beaded corners, and culminates in a Celtic cross head.
