Description
The ice house, built around 1808 by garden designer and horticulturist John Veitch for Sir Thomas Acland, is located 183 meters west-north-west of Killerton House. It was incorporated into a rock garden around 1900.
This structure is primarily made of brick, with limestone rubble facing the entrance tunnel and later passage. The ice house has a circular plan and features a covered entrance tunnel approached from the south-west via a passageway.
The ice house is accessed from the south-west by an open passage, added around 1900, which is cut into the slope and has retaining walls of limestone rubble. It includes a brick-built entrance tunnel that leads into the subterranean ice chamber, which is covered with earth for insulation. The angled entrance is surrounded by rough-hewn limestone blocks and a large stone lintel. Inside, the entrance tunnel is brick-lined, brick-floored, and has an arched roof. At the end of the tunnel is a second, narrower entrance with a modern metal grille, providing access to the brick-lined ice chamber that features a domed roof. The walls of the chamber have three concentric rack-grooves, each over 1 meter apart, which may have supported timber floors and possibly a timber lining. The brick floor is approximately 4 meters below the entrance and includes an octagonal drain at its center, with a drainage channel that exits below the southern wall.
