Description
The bank barn, located 40 metres south-west of Ivington Farmhouse, is a large structure that forms the south-west range of a planned farmstead. It was built by the Garretts of Bishop's Court as the Home Farm in 1846. The barn is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped dry slate roof with lead rolls.
The barn has storage space beneath and includes an engine house at the rear. Its elevation towards the farmyard is very tall and has two large openings, each flanked by brick pilasters and fitted with contemporary double doors that have strap hinges. Between these openings is an oculus. The ground floor, which occupies one-third of the height of the elevation, contains three elliptical arches and three doorways, all with their original planked doors; two of these doors have barred fanlights.
At the rear, there are two wagon entrances that correspond to the two openings at the front. A partially dismantled engine house remains, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The roof structure includes tie beams, king-posts, and diagonal struts in all trusses. This barn is part of a very well-preserved and complete planned farmstead from the 1840s.
