Description
The Old Registry Office is a narrow two-storey building constructed around 1850-1860 in the Early English Gothic style. It is made of coursed stone with freestone dressings. The first floor features a tripartite moulded arch window, which has shafts and moulded capitals. On the ground floor, there are similar lancet windows flanking a central doorway, which is adorned with two orders of shafts and a moulded two-centred arch. The windows are fitted with leaded panes. Moulded string courses are present at the cill levels. The building is supported by end buttresses with set-offs and has a parapet that includes a Lombard frieze. Register Offices were established under legislation in 1836/37.
