Description
The Conservative Club and Thomas Whitty House is an 18th-century factory building that was once the Axminster Carpet Factory, established in 1755 and closed in 1835. This large dressed stone structure features a tarred slate roof with stone coping on the gable ends and is located on a corner site with a curved angle. The building stands three storeys tall and has a ten-window range. Most of the segmental arched openings contain three-light multi-pane windows with small central opening lights, although all the second-floor windows have been replaced with modern ones. The first floor has six large sash windows with glazing bars, set in segmental arch openings. There are three doorways adorned with large entablatures and Tuscan pilasters, with the center and right-hand doorways retaining their original flush panel doors. A right-hand segmental arched carriageway is also present.
