Description
The Lodge and the adjoining gatepiers and railings, located 550 metres south-southwest of Pynes, serve as the main entrance to the Pynes estate. Likely designed in 1852 by Ambrose Poynter, who also worked on mid-19th century additions to Pynes, this gate lodge is constructed of brick with stone dressing and features a slate roof with heavy, simply moulded overhanging eaves and lion heads on the gutter. The building has a T-shaped layout, with the entrance wing facing the drive and its gable end, along with the other wing, facing the road. A canted bay window is present in the gable end, while the other windows, all featuring stone architraves and keystones with segmental heads, include two on the rear wing and one on either side of the doorway. The doorway is placed under a moulded canopy supported by iron, scrolled brackets. There are two stacks with original iron chimney pots. In front and to the right of the lodge stand four rusticated stone gatepiers topped with pomegranates, positioned on either side of the now-lost gates, with the remaining gatepiers flanking the surviving iron railings. The railings consist of spear designs interspaced with larger ones, all set on a stone plinth. A small addition to the left of the lodge slightly disrupts the overall design but remains discreet.
