Description

UPTON PYNE UPTON PYNE HILL SX 99 NW 3/68 The Lodge and adjoining gatepiers - and railings, 550 metres SSW of Pynes - II Gate lodge, gatepiers and railings at the main entrance to the Pynes estate. Probably 1852 by Ambrose Poynter, the architect of the mid C19 additions to Pynes. Brick with stone dressing. Slate roof with heavy but simply moulded overhanging eaves and lion heads on gutter. T-shaped; entrance wing facing the drive, its gable end and the other wing facing the road. Canted bay window in gable end. The other windows, all with stone architraves and keystones, in segmental heads, 2 to rear wing, and one on either side of doorway which is placed under a moulded canopy supported by iron, scrolled brackets. 2 stacks with original iron chimney pots. 4 stone gatepiers in front and to right of lodge, rusticated surmounted with pomegranates, one to either side of the now-lost gates, the other terminating the surviving flanking iron railings. The railings are spears interspaced with larger ones, all set on a stone plinth. A small addition to the left unbalances the design, but is discrete.
