Description
Perriton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, with possible earlier origins. It was modernised around 1970. The construction consists of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick. One chimneyshaft is plastered, and the roof is thatched. The farmhouse faces southwest, with a main two-room block that likely once had a passage through the left end. The former hall has a rear lateral stack, and the unheated inner room, now the kitchen, is at the right end. A one-room plan parlour block projects forward at a right angle on this end and has an inner side lateral stack. A service wing projects at right angles to the rear of the left end. The layout suggests origins as a 16th-century open hall house. The house is two storeys high, with a 2:1 window front featuring circa-1970 timber casements with rectangular panes of leaded glass. The early to mid-17th century front doorway is at the left end of the main block, featuring a studded oak plank door within an oak doorframe with an ogee-moulded surround. A 20th-century gabled, thatched porch is present. Surviving sections of old plaster render reveal a clasping pilaster effect on the corners, contrasting smooth plaster with rough-finished areas. The roofs are gable ended. Interior details were not accessible for inspection, but 17th-century, and possibly 16th-century, carpentry is suspected.
