Description

Corner Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It underwent modernization in the late 19th to early 20th centuries and again around 1970. The building is constructed of local stone rubble, which is plastered and lightly incised to resemble ashlar. It features a stone rubble and brick stack topped with 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof over the main cottage, with a slate roof on the service outshot.

The cottage faces southeast and is built across a hillside. Its layout consists of one room wide and two rooms deep, with the staircase located in the front left corner. Originally, only the front room was heated by a stack in the dividing wall, which is now blocked by the staircase. Currently, only the rear room is heated by a secondary stack in the left end wall. The cottage has two storeys and includes a secondary kitchen outshot on the left end.

The exterior features an irregular two-window front with late 19th to early 20th-century casements that have glazing bars. The front doorway is positioned to the left of center and contains a late 19th to early 20th-century six-panel door, which is sheltered by a contemporary gabled porch with shaped bargeboards. The main roof is pyramidal.

The interior reflects the late 19th to early 20th-century and circa 1970 modernizations, with no exposed carpentry. The rear fireplace was rebuilt around 1970. Corner Cottage is part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the small village of Yarcombe.
