Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Queen's Square are two houses located in Broadclyst, with No. 1 being a house that has a late 17th century core and significant alterations. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, rendered, and features a gabled-end pantiled roof. The building has two storeys, and the rear elevation shows evidence of an older house with its irregular shape and a large external lateral back stack. The front has a four-window range that was refenestrated and heightened in the 19th century. There are three 3-light ground floor windows, along with a 20th century 1-light window, and a door located under a porch supported by shaped brackets. Above, there are two 3-light and two 2-light windows, all of which are timber casements with six panes in each light, dating from the 19th century. The house has one axial stack and one internal end stack on the left. This building is included for its group value.

No. 2 is a cottage that adjoins a barn, also dating from the late 17th century. It is made of cob with a stone plinth, rendered, and has a hipped thatched roof on the right-hand end. The left side adjoins No. 1, with the roof ridge and eaves at a much lower level. The front features one first-floor window under eyebrow eaves, with its sill at wall-plate level, which is a 2-light timber casement. There is a single light window to the left of the doorway, which is under a porch on shaped brackets. To the right of the door, there is a 2-light window set between two buttresses, along with another 1-light window to the right. The barn has a separate entrance, and its roof structure, while the house roof space is sealed, includes slender principals with collars lapped, an apex that is morticed and side pegged, and purlins positioned at the back of the rafters.
