Description

Honors, including the garden boundary wall adjoining to the north-east, is a house dated 1826. It is constructed of cob on a stone plinth, rendered, with a slate hipped roof. This is a double depth house with a rear service wing, standing two storeys high. The front features three bays, with a central doorway that has a panelled architrave and a six-panelled door, which includes two small rectangular toplights. To the left, there is a timber sash window with six panes per light, and a slated canted bay with three sashes, each having six panes per light. Above, there are three timber sash windows, each with six panes and Crown glass. The house has tall side stacks made of brick, which are mostly rendered, and one hand-thrown chimney pot. The rear right-hand wing includes three lateral internal stacks facing the roadside, one timber sash window with six panes and horns at the end, and two timber sashes with eight panes each on the garden front. Inside, the house features plain, simply moulded cornices, picture rails, and staircases. A dated armorial slate indicates the year 1826. The roadside elevation has no windows and rests on an unusually high plinth designed to protect the cob from frequent flooding from the Culm and Exe rivers. The garden is enclosed by a 1.5 storey rendered wall that follows the line of the highway and has tile capping.
