Description

A group of farm buildings dating from the mid-19th century stand immediately south of Rewe Barton. They are built of coursed volcanic trap rubble with brick dressings to the openings and quoins on the roadside front, and brick is used to the rear. The buildings are set around a courtyard and have dry slate gabled-end roofs. While some interiors have been reordered, the exterior arrangement remains largely intact. The roadside elevation is composed of three main elements. A central entrance arch, with a projecting end-gabled roof and overhanging eaves with moulded purlins, features a round-headed wagon archway with a keystone and a keyed occulus above. To the left of the arch, five upper-floor openings of varying sizes are set above five smaller lower openings, one of which is blocked. To the right, there are three upper-floor and three lower openings, with a lower eaves line. All openings have projecting brick sills. The roofs throughout the courtyard buildings feature tie beams and collars, side-pegged and morticed. This building is primarily recognised for its bold roadside elevation, which is unadorned save for a tall iron weathervane.
