Description

St Andrews School is a village school, originally built in 1839 and enlarged in 1853 and 1875. It was founded by Rev C Woodcock and formerly served as St Andrews College and Industrial Schools. The building is constructed of knapped flint with freestone dressings. It has a steeply pitched slate roof with stone coping and finials to the gable ends. The design follows an ā€˜E’ shape, with parallel ranges at the rear. The central single-storey section features a two-storey projecting porch with a shaped gable, a four-centred arch doorway with carved spandrels, a hood mould, and a ribbon band above. Tall rectangular windows are set within shaped gables to the left and right of the porch. The right-hand wing comprises a school room, one storey with an attic, and a shouldered arch doorway facing the forecourt. The left-hand wing is a two-storey master's house, featuring a four-centred arch porch in the angle and a stone oriel in the gable end facing the road. The west return has a pair of perpendicular windows and a cusped rose window above the gable. At the rear (north), a long parallel range has two storeys, stone mullion and transom windows, two-centred arch doorways, and buttresses with set offs. Further ranges to the north have been demolished. An illustration appeared in the Illustrated London News on 6 July 1861.
