Description
Chardstock Court, previously listed as The Court, is a former manor house of the Bishops of Salisbury. It has fabric dating from the early 14th century, with alterations made in the 15th and 16th centuries. The building fell into disrepair in the 20th century, and the interior is reported to have been largely gutted, with a new roof added. Constructed of stone rubble with freestone dressings, it features tiled roofs with coped gable ends and is two storeys high, with a W-shaped plan.
The original south-east wing retains various medieval elements, including a cusped arch two-light mullion window, several re-used arched window heads, and chamfered stone door frames. On the north side, there is a doorway with a four-centred arch and a blocked cinquefoil circular window in the gable above, along with a fragment of a shield at the apex. The stair tower on the north side has a quatrefoil window with a two-centred arch hood mould. The north-west wing, which has a new roof, is two storeys and three bays, having been entirely refenestrated in the mid-20th century. The south-west wing is a complete rebuild from the 20th century.
While the interior has been largely altered, a previous listing from 1960 noted features such as a newel staircase, various plank and muntin partitions, moulded ceiling beams, and old fireplaces. A detached range that was destroyed around 1930 had a 15th-century open timber roof. The manor house was crenellated in 1377 by Bishop Erghum.
