Description
The Chardstock War Memorial is a stone structure located in a small enclosure on the south side of Main Street, approximately 75 meters east of the Church of St Andrew and near The George Inn, both of which are listed as Grade II*. The memorial features a short wheel-head cross that rises from a tapered pedestal, which is square in shape and stands on a single step. The pedestal is rough-hewn on three sides, while the front is dressed.
On the front face of the pedestal, there are inscriptions. The main dedicatory inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CHARDSTOCK WHO IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 FACED DEATH IN THE CAUSE OF GOD AND THE RIGHT." Below this are the names of the fallen, with 18 names listed for the First World War and 10 names for the Second World War (1939 – 1945).
A small metal flagpole is attached to the rear face of the pedestal by brackets. The cross is set on a concrete surface, and the surrounding embanked planting beds are supported by a rubble wall. The memorial enclosure is enclosed by a rubble wall with a centrally-placed wooden gate.
