Description
Semley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard to the north of the Church of St Leonard, close to the main entrance and near the Grade II-listed walls and railings with gates on the north and west sides of the churchyard.
The memorial is made of rough-hewn granite and features a tall wheel-head cross with an inverted Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief on the north face of the cross-head and shaft. This cross rises from a tapering square plinth that sits on a square stone base, which has been chamfered on the north face. All inscriptions and names are located on the north face of the memorial and are rendered in leaded lettering.
At the bottom of the cross shaft, within a shield-shaped inset panel, are the words "TO THE GLORY OF GOD." Below this, in an inset panel carved into the plinth, is the inscription "AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by 16 names.
On the chamfered panel at the north face of the base, there is an additional inscription for the Second World War, "1939 – 1945," along with 5 names.
The memorial is set within a small rectangular gravel area, bordered by stone kerbs that are raised at the corners.
