Description
The K6 telephone kiosk dates from 1935 and was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It is a standardised design constructed from painted red cast iron, featuring long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with applied crowns on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. The internal equipment is modernised and the kiosk is in good condition with intact windows and display signs.
The kiosk is located on a grassy verge in the centre of the village. It stands approximately 30 metres to the west of Semley School and Schoolhouse, which are also listed at Grade II, and is adjacent to the village pound, also Grade II listed. The Church of St Leonard, a Grade II listed building, is approximately 60 metres northeast of the kiosk. The kiosk holds a visual relationship with this group of buildings.
The K6 telephone kiosk represents a milestone in 20th-century industrial design, evolving from Scott’s earlier K2 design. It was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to produce, with over 70,000 eventually made. It exemplifies a thoughtful adaptation of architectural tradition to contemporary technological needs.
