Description
The barns at The Dovecote, formerly part of Watergate Farm, are located to the north of Watergate Farmhouse and date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with corrugated iron roofs. The main barn has an aisled design on both sides, featuring a four-bay west end and a five-bay east end. The central section, which likely consisted of six bays, has been replaced by a single-storey farm building from the mid-20th century. The west section has a hipped end and includes a cartway in the fourth bay, while the east section also features a hipped roof with a cartway in the fourth bay. Inside, there are jowled posts with straight corner braces to the ties, queen struts and collars, and a single purlin with wind braces, which are present only in the cartway bay. The roof at the east end has been partially reconstructed. Attached to this end is a south wing of seven bays, likely from the 18th century, which is also twice aisled. The tie-beams in this wing have raking struts supporting a single tier of purlins.
