Description
The barn at Alton Priors Farm is a Grade II listed building dating from the early 19th century. It originally served as a barn and smithy but is now used as a workshop. The structure is timber framed and features weatherboarding with a slate roof. It consists of seven bays, including aisles, with the central threshing bay being wider than the others. The aisle posts rest on dwarf brick walls, some of which have been repaired. Curved braces support the arcade plates and heavy tie beams, while small struts are present on the principal rafters and collars. The outer posts of the narrow aisle are jowled. In the penultimate western bay, there is a freestanding brick forge with two hearths, and the aisle bays are equipped with work benches. The workshop contains bellows, quenching tanks, an anvil, blacksmith's tools, and two hand-operated vertical drills. The eastern bays have been divided off to serve as an engineering workshop.
