Description

A house dating from the late medieval period, with alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed, with brick extensions, and has a thatched roof. The house is largely single-storey, but raised to two storeys in part, and comprises five bays. Bays 2 and 3 from the south are timber framed independently; bay 3 features herringbone noggings, and both are likely 17th-century additions to increase the height to two storeys. Bays 4 and 5 represent an 18th-century extension with a gable stack. Bay 1 is single-storey. The timber framing includes narrow panels in bay 2, a chamfered projecting wall plate, and wavy corner braces. The original entrance is now in bay 5. Inside, the framed bays contain two pairs of cruck roof timbers, supported by large sarsens which project externally. A large chalkstone stack is in bay 4, serving bay 3 of the timber-framed house, and it has a timber lintel. The cruck frame between bays 3 and 4 incorporates arch braces to the collar.
