Description
Rockley Manor is a large house built in the 18th century, with later extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was restored in the 20th century to reflect the style of the later 18th century. The exterior features stucco on stone and brick, topped with a slate roof. The house has two storeys, cellars, and attics, arranged in a double pile plan.
The main garden front is symmetrical with five bays; the central three bays are slightly set forward and topped with a pediment. The central entrance features a six-panelled door flanked by eight-pane sash windows, all enclosed in an Ionic tetrastyle flush portico. The flanking windows have moulded surrounds and aprons, with segmental pediments, while the outer windows are similar but have triangular pediments. There is a Venetian window in the central first floor, along with nine-pane sash windows. An oculus is set in the pediment, which extends into heavily dentilled eaves. The hipped roof also includes two six-pane flat-roofed dormers.
The south front has five bays as well, with a central glazed door situated between large canted columned bays. A 20th-century raised Tuscan portico creates a covered terrace across the front. The returns feature dentilled eaves and two dormers. The roof is composed of three parallel hipped roofs, with the central one topped by a wooden bell tower.
Inside, the garden front opens into an apsidal hall that includes niches and a dentilled cornice. To the left is the drawing room, which has an Adamesque ceiling and a fine fireplace. A cross passage with dado panelling from the south front leads to a staircase on the north side. The library in the southwest corner features an Adam-style fireplace. There are later extensions beyond the library and on the north side.
