Description
Beckhampton House is an inn dating from the mid-18th century, originally known as The Catherine Wheel. After 1855, it was converted into a farmhouse and underwent 19th-century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of brick on limestone sills and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with five bays, including a four-bay return on the east side and a 19th-century gabled bay with a lean-to at the rear.
A notable feature is the 19th-century crenellated Bath stone porch, which has a round arch, carved spandrels, and glazed doors. The windows are twelve-pane sashes set within cambered-headed openings, supported by gauged brick lintels with stone keys. The central window is distinguished by moulded brick pilasters and an entablature. The building has moulded eaves and a hipped roof, with the main stack located in the second bay. The inn served as the meeting place for the political Beckhampton Club in the early 19th century.
