Description
Elston Hill Farmhouse and the attached brewhouse were built in the 1850s or possibly the 1860s. The farmhouse is constructed of Flemish bond red brick with limestone ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It features brick ridge and end stacks with moulded stone capping. The building has a double-depth central hall plan, with the brewhouse attached by walls that enclose a yard to the rear left (northwest).
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window south front. A flat-roofed porch with moulded stone cornices features moulded imposts above a semi-circular arch that frames a six-panel door. There are gauged brick arches over 2/2-pane sash windows. The eaves are wide and project, complemented by a moulded stone cornice. Other elevations include 2/2, 4/4, and 6/6-pane sashes, as well as a rear doorway leading to the yard and a recessed six-panel door to the left.
The brewhouse has a tall wall attached to it, with a similar stack, gabled roof, and gauged brick arches over casement windows and a doorway. Inside the farmhouse, there is a narrow-well staircase with a wreathed handrail and fret-out brackets, fine marble fireplaces with cast-iron grates, moulded cornices, panelled doors, and extensive cellars with heavy doors. The brewhouse has retained its original features, including coppers and ovens.
