Description

ORCHESTON Elston Hill ST 93 SE 1143-1/10000 Farmhouse and attached brewhouse GV II

Farmhouse. 1850's or possibly 1860's. Flemish bond red brick with limestone ashlar quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roof; brick ridge and end stacks with moulded stone capping. Double-depth central hall plan with brewhouse attached by walls enclosing yard to rear left (north west). 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window south front. Flat-roofed porch with moulded stone cornices has moulded imposts to semi-circular arch over 6-panel door. Gauged brick arches over 2/2-pane sashes. Wide projecting eaves and moulded stone cornice. 2/2, 4/4 and 6/6-pane sashes to other elevations, which include rear doorway to yard and 6- panel door recessed to left. Tall wall attached to brewhouse with similar stack, gabled roof and gauged brick arches over casement windows and doorway. Interior of house includes narrow-well staircase with wreathed handrail, fret-out brackets; fine marble fireplaces with cast-iron grates, moulded cornices, panelled doors and extensive cellars with heavy doors. Brewhouse has retained original features including coppers and ovens.
