Description

The barn and cowsheds located to the northeast of Mays Farmhouse are a range of agricultural buildings. The barn likely dates back to the 17th century but was restructured in the 19th century and underwent restoration and alterations in the early 20th century. The cowsheds were built in the early 19th century. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble with some dressed stone at the corners and the jambs of the northwest midstrey, featuring wooden lintels and a stone slate roof. The 19th-century northwest midstrey has a gabled roof and plank gates, with a gabled, louvred vent above. There is a decayed southeast midstrey that has a 20th-century corrugated iron extension. The attached cowshed range consists of 10 bays supported by circular stone piers and has a gabled stone slate roof. Some concrete block walls have been inserted between the piers. At the northwest end, there are small stables and a tack room. Inside, the barn features a through-purlin collar and tie-beam roof structure, with some timbers having been renewed.
