Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built as a rectory between 1728 and 1737, with a datestone from 1729 on the stack. It features a rear block added in 1785 and further alterations made around 1830 to 1840. The building is constructed of vitrified brick with red brick dressings, raised brick quoins, and a plat band, topped with a tiled roof. It has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a total of five bays.

Inside, there is a central hallway flanked by a study and a reception room. The hallway extends into the later rear block, which leads to an early 19th-century staircase. The entrance features a margin glazed door set over five steps, with stone surrounds and a flat canopy supported by carved consoles. The windows are adorned with moulded architraves and fasciae, also made of stone, and have segmental heads and keystones, with later 12-pane sash windows. There are external stacks at both ends and three hipped dormers. Notably, two heraldic quatrefoils are set in the north stack.

Inside, the Rector's study is fitted with full simple panelling and a cornice. The reception room has a wood fire surround from the 18th century, which was formerly located on the first floor. The staircase and fireplaces are generally from the early 19th century, with iron inserts in the attic. The study features inlaid marble and a bust of Augustus William Hare, a public orator and author of 'The Alton Sermons', who lived in the house.
