Description
Alton Barnes Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now functioning as a house and cottage, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of diaper brick with stone quoins on the southern four bays and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and a main elevation comprising six bays, with a six-panelled door and a bracketed canopy located in the third bay. The three bays to the right are earlier in date. The windows are set beneath gauged segmental arches with stone keys and were altered in the late 18th to early 19th century when they were replaced with 12-pane sashes featuring wide boxes, with the end bays being tripartite. Historically, Manor Farm was the site of a violent uprising by farmworkers in 1830, during which the farmer, Mr. Pyle, fired his weapon at the protestors but was saved from harm by one of his workers. Earlier, in 1811, Mr. Pyle had cut the white horse above Alton.
