Description
The bridge over the former Avon Navigation, located to the rear of the stable block, is a footbridge dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of irregular bond brick with limestone dressings. The bridge features two round arches made with stone voussoirs and keystones, along with low cutwaters on both sides. The parapet and the angled revetment walls on either side are made of rounded bricks. On the east face between the arches, there is a limestone heraldic shield that bears the arms of Bouverie and Marsham, which dates the bridge to around 1748. This is linked to Jacob Bouverie, who married Elizabeth Marsham in 1741 and became Viscount Folkestone in 1747. The bridge is too low for canal traffic and was built after the abandonment of the Navigation in the 1730s.
