Description
The Summer House in the grounds of Bishopstrow House is an early 19th-century pavilion. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with rubble stone at the rear and features a pointed Welsh slate roof. The building is octagonal in shape and has a three-sided loggia at the front, standing at a single storey.
The front facade includes three hollow-chamfered square openings, which are partly closed by wooden trellis, and central half-glazed double doors that close off the remainder of the octagon. On either side of the doors are 18-pane sash windows with margin lights, and the facade is enhanced by pilasters with a key motif. The five sides at the rear have hollow-chamfered square panels and no windows. Below the plain cornice of the roof is an astragal.
Inside, the Summer House features a stone floor, three round-arched niches on the rear walls, and a moulded plaster ceiling cornice. It is set in a picturesque location within the gardens of the Regency-style Bishopstrow House, which was associated with the Temple family.
