Description
The tunnel below the A36 in the grounds of Bishopstrow House dates from 1815 and features north and south portals. The date is inscribed on the keystones of the portals. The tunnel is built of English garden wall bond brick and has a segmental barrel vault. The portals are round-arched and made of vermiculated ashlar, with large voussoirs and keystones that are incised with "WT/1815," referring to William Temple. This tunnel was constructed to connect Bishopstrow House, located on the north side of the road, with the gardens of an earlier house to the south, which was also built for William Temple.
