Description
The temple in the grounds of Bishopstrow House is a Doric rotunda dated 1770, as indicated on the floor. It is constructed of limestone and features a lead domed roof. The structure stands on a two-step stylobate and is supported by eight Tuscan columns. It has a frieze adorned with triglyphs and a modillioned cornice that leads up to the dome, which is topped with a ball finial. The circular stone floor is inscribed with the words 'Erected 1770'. This temple is set in a picturesque garden beside the River Wylye. It was built for the 17th-century Bishopstrow House, which was destroyed around 1800 and replaced by the current Bishopstrow House located to the north of Warminster Road. The gardens and the house are connected by a tunnel that runs under the road.
