Description

No 14, known as Grove House, is a house from the mid-18th century with an earlier core, constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof featuring end stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic, presenting a formal, nearly symmetrical five-window front that includes three hipped dormers. On the first floor, there are five two-light mullion windows framed by architrave surrounds. The ground floor features a central door in an architrave, set within an enclosed porch that has an ashlar pediment and a bolection-moulded surround. On either side of the door, there are twelve-pane sash windows, with a drip course above them, and slightly taller sashes on the left side.

Inside, the house contains some heavy timbers and a large timber-lintel fireplace at the south end, suggesting an earlier construction date. There is an 18th-century closed-string staircase with square newels, and the north end room has fielded paneling and a bolection-moulded corner fireplace. The roof is a five-bay double-purlin structure. Attached to the house is a barn, which is the property of the National Trust and was formerly known as Morrell's Yard. This barn is also made of rubble stone with a stone slate roof and features two altered full-height openings on the south side.
