Description

Lacock Primary School was built in 1824 and later extended in 1852 and 1869 by Pritchard. The building is constructed of squared rubble stone with stone slate roofs. The original school features a symmetrical front with two 4-light Tudor-style mullion windows, each with hood moulds, flanking Tudor-style doors. Between the windows is a carved stone representation of the Talbot arms, accompanied by a plaque stating, "Erected by W.H.F. Talbot Esqr 1824."

To the left, there is an addition in a steeply roofed Perpendicular Gothic style, which includes a far-projecting cross wing and a short link with an end stack connecting to the original building. This section has coped gables, a large 4-light window in the Perpendicular style on the south end, and a stack on the east side. A lean-to passage was added against the east wall in 1911 by H. Brakspear. The west side wall features a central gable above 3-light windows, with 2-light flat-headed windows on either side and heavy corbels supporting the gutter.

Inside, there is a fine mid-16th century doorcase with cornices on each side, which was relocated from the north-east chapel of Lacock Church during its restoration in 1861. The school was founded by W.H. Fox-Talbot to commemorate his 21st birthday in 1821 and is noted to have been enlarged in 1852 and 1871 according to village guides, or in 1864 according to Kelly's Directory and Pevsner, with the school log-book stating 1869 as the date of extension.
