Description
15 The Green is a house located in Calne, dating from the mid-18th century, with a rear extension added in the mid-19th century. The building features coursed, squared rubble that was previously rendered, with limestone ashlar dressings, a right-hand external gable stack, and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a three-window range. The symmetrical front includes a cornice and parapet, along with a raised ashlar surround and pediment framing a glazed door. There is a left-hand ashlar projecting porch with a blocking course, featuring a round-arched doorway with a batswing fanlight and a six-panel door. The outer ground- and first-floor windows are paired, while the central window is single, all fitted with six-over-six pane sashes, and the second-floor sashes are plate glass with concrete lintels. The rear elevation showcases a wide French window leading to the 19th-century extension, and the right-hand return has a timber verandah attached to the rear range.
Inside, the entrance passage from the porch is divided by round arches leading to a large rear stair hall, which features a notable mid-19th century stone open-well stair with stick balusters, a curtail, and a gallery topped with a domed lantern. The rear rooms from the mid-19th century include black and white marble fireplaces and six-panel doors. The 18th-century right-hand section has a rear open-well stair with uncut string and stick balusters, and the rear service wing is divided by an axial stack.
