Description

This revolving crane, dating from 1831, served the Kennet and Avon Canal Company and was restored in 1972-78. The crane is constructed of timber and features an octagonal main shaft with a head bearing, supporting a revolving framework. This framework includes a jib arm attached to horizontal shears, and a counterbalance system using stone weights. The crane has manual winding gear, with pinions connected to an iron drum and ratchet check. The jib arm has a throw of 4.55 metres, extending 2.66 metres over the canal.
