Description
Alderstone Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse that was enlarged in the 1840s. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered cob, with English garden wall bond brickwork to the 1840s additions, and has a tiled roof. It is arranged in an L-shape. The main two-storey, three-window front has a 20th-century door and hipped porch on the right side of the original 17th-century section. To the left of the porch is a four-light casement window, while a twelve-pane sash window with a keystone above a flat arch sits to the right. The first floor has a four-light casement, a three-light casement, and a twelve-pane sash window with a keystone to the right. There are two pairs of diagonally-placed brick stacks, likely dating to the 19th century. The left return side has 20th-century casement windows and a glazed door leading to a rear wing. The right return has a blocked window and a twelve-pane sash window with a keystone on the ground floor. The rear wing of the original 17th-century build incorporates an outshut with a three-light casement, while the 19th-century additions feature a half-glazed door and a twelve-pane sash window. Internally, planked doors are fitted with strap hinges; chamfered beams have bar stops, and cellar beams have ogee stops. There are open fireplaces in the hall and kitchen of the original wing, with chamfered lintels featuring run-out stops. A timber-framed partition separates the hall and wing. Records indicate that the farm was owned by the St. Barbe family in the mid-16th century.
