Description

The Chapter House, located at No 9 St John's Street, is a Grade I listed building dating from the 15th century. This four-storey structure features a tall single gabled front made of timber frame with wattle and daub infilling. The building oversails at the first and second floor levels, supported by moulded trimmers and curved brackets beneath the second floor. The gable is adorned with moulded bargeboards, and the roof is covered with old tiles.

On the third floor, there is a four-light mullioned casement window. The second floor has two three-light windows flanking a central six-light mullioned and transomed casement, although the outer windows are now blocked. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, with narrow lights flanking a central window. While all casements are modern leaded, the frames are original except for the central windows, which have been restored. The ground floor features a modern casement and a plain door.

To the right, there is a gabled three-storey extension that is timber framed and plastered, containing one 18th-century sash window on the first floor and two modern casements on the ground floor.

Historically, this inn served as a meeting place for Royalists during the Civil War, associated with the flight of Charles II and the possible rescue of Charles I. Inside, the first floor retains original panelling and a stone fireplace.

Nos 1 to 13 (odd) form a very important group.
