Description
Nos 7 and 7A on St John's Street are a notable building dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The structure has two storeys and is timber framed, with the first floor covered in stucco that overhangs on a boxed bressumer. The gable end features an early 19th-century slate roof and a projecting moulded eaves cornice.
On the first floor, there are two large windows, each four panes wide, set within reeded architrave surrounds that have corner blocks and a small cornice. These flank a larger central French window, which has marginal glazing and is framed by fluted three-quarter Doric columns, topped with a broken entablature and an open pediment. A plain bar guard rail is present, and this window was previously used as a door for accessing the tops of coaches.
The ground floor has a plain 19th-century shop front with two and three-light windows, along with a flat-arched yard entry to the right. The timber framing is exposed on the side within the passage. This building was formerly the Assembly Room of the King's Arms, located at No 9. Nos 1 to 13 (odd) form a very important group.
