Description
The Spa Pump at the factory of John Sawtell and Company is a 18th-century structure located on the west side of Holt in the Midlands. This spa pump features a niche at the south end of the factory, which has likely been reset. It is supported by limestone columns topped with egg and dart moulded capitals, leading up to a marble entablature that bears a Latin inscription. The back wall of the recess displays a relief-carved marble urn with an inscription that notes the spa's historical significance, mentioning visits by Lady Lisle and the Rev. James Lewis in 1720. Mineral waters were discovered at this site in the late 17th century, and it was developed into a small spa in the early 18th century, remaining in use until the early 19th century.
