Description

No 4 Barton Orchard is a house attached to No 3, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The house is constructed of rendered stone, with some exposed stone in the gable facing the street. The roof features asbestos cement slate on the lower slope and double roman tiles on the upper slope, while other areas have slate, and there is a section of corrugated clear plastic on the back wing.

This small house has a stepped-back frontage from No 3 and a deep back wing, with a lean-to on the right side that has a double roman tile roof. It is two storeys tall with an attic and has a one-window front. On the ground floor, there is a tall 20th-century casement window, and in the lean-to, a 20th-century three-light casement with glazing bars. The first floor features a pair of 20th-century glazing bar casements with broad flush mullions, and the roof has a dormer with a 2-light glazing bar casement and a flat segmental head.

The projecting porch on the left has a 20th-century door. On the right return, there is a 3-light steel casement in the lean-to, and steps lead up to a 2-storey wing that has a 20th-century flush door in an inset section under a continuous wood beam, with a 2-light wood casement above. The gable on the right is built against a higher road level, with only the upper part visible, made of both stone and squared rubble. This wing has a long sweep-down to the rear slope. The gables are mainly coped in stone, with some concrete replacements, and there is a cut stone stack on the main mansard gable and a small brick stack on the swept-down slope of the wing.

This house may have originally served as a service wing for the larger property, No 3, next door. It is included in the listing mainly for its group value.
