Description
The French Horn consists of two cottages located on Codford High Street, dating from around 1700, with an extension from the 18th century. The exterior features a mix of chequered flint and limestone, with some areas rendered, and a thatched roof that has a coped verge and a brick stack on the left side, while the right side has a half-hip. The building is arranged in an L-plan and is two stories high, with a three-window entrance front for No 2.
The central entrance has a 20th-century gabled porch with a planked door, flanked by leaded casement windows with three lights on either side. On the first floor, there is a three-light casement window to the left and two two-light casement windows to the right, all of which are leaded. The left side of the building has a 20th-century door leading to No 1 and additional leaded casement windows. The right side features a lean-to extension.
Inside No 2, there is a deep chamfered beam with stepped stops, which may have been reset, and an open fireplace with a cambered chamfered lintel set on chamfered stone jambs, complete with a bread oven. The building was known as the French Horn Inn during the 19th century.
