Description
The Merchant House is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is timber framed with brick noggings and features a thatched roof. The building has two storeys and two and a half bays, following a lobby entry plan with an added narrow bay to the left, which is now used as a kitchen. The entrance is located opposite the stack in the central half bay, with a stair positioned at the side. The framing consists of four panels high, made up of tall rectangular panels without angle braces. The off-centre door is made of timber and has a boarded canopy above it, with a blocked stair window situated over the door. The leaded timber windows are found on the upper floor, which features raised gables above the main bays at the front. There are central paired brick flues that are linked at their heads and stack to the added bay, which has a hipped roof.
Inside, the house includes chamfered fire lintels that curve down to the jambs at the ends. The central spine beams have nicked ogee stops, particularly in the right bay, which is likely the parlour end.
