Description

Apple Tree Cottage is a house that has been converted into two adjoining cottages, dating from the 15th to 16th centuries, with a refacing in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and topped with a thatched roof, while the east gable is rendered. It likely began as a two-bay open medieval hall, featuring a parlour bay at the east end and a service bay at the west. A major stack was added in the 16th century, which led to the hall being ceiled, and the structure was subdivided in the 19th century.

The entrance to No 5 is through the hall bay, accessed via a boarded door, while No 6 has a gable entrance with a half-glazed door. No 5 features paned timber windows, whereas No 6 has mid-20th century metal windows. The building has a central brick stack and additional stacks at both gable ends. Inside, there are two closed cruck frames with Type C apex, and a central open truss that was likely removed when the major stack was inserted. The living room in No 6 has a spine beam with double bar stopped chamfers, and the spine beam in the upper bay of No 5 features double-lobed bar stops. The major stack includes a high chamfered timber fire lintel set on stone jambs. The left gable has been extended to accommodate a second stack, probably from the 17th century, which includes an oven or smoking chamber.
