Description

Norton Manor is a manor house located on Norton Sherston Road. It was built in the early 17th century, with a south addition completed in 1623, as noted on the porch. The house underwent re-ordering in the 1850s, received extensions in 1901 by F.A. Lawson of Stroud, and had further additions in 1925. The structure features coursed rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins, and ashlar detailing on the south porch, window surrounds, stacks, and copings. The roofs are hipped and gabled with stone slates.

The manor has a T-shaped plan, with the early 17th-century range to the north and the 1623 addition to the south, along with a 1901 linking section to the east and a 1925 west porch. The 1623 block has a south front that is two storeys high with five bays. The window openings were regularized in the 19th century, featuring three and four-light ovolo mullions with small pane glazing, hoodmoulds, and flush strainer arches. The central two-storey gabled porch is supported by Roman Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic columns above, both adorned with heavily moulded cornices. A three-light ovolo-moulded mullion is present in the parvise, topped with a ball finial at the gable apex. The entrance features a round arch with a keystone and a Tudor-arched inner doorway with a plank door. The tall stacks were rebuilt in 1901, featuring egg-and-dart cornices. The west front has a similar porch dated 1925, which includes a now-glazed balcony.

The early 17th-century range to the north has two attenuated gables and 1901 ovolo mullion fenestration. The east entrance front, dated around the doorway, is from 1901. Inside, there is a Jacobean-style staircase from the 1850s, inserted by Lord Holland. The Drawing Room features early 17th-century panelling that was added in 1901-1909 by Captain C.H. Fenwick, and there is a fine marble chimneypiece in the second Dining Room, which has detached columns and lotus capitals.
