Description

This is a mid-19th century refronting of an earlier 18th-century building on Winchester Street. The building comprises numbers 56 to 60 and is constructed of grey brick, with number 58 painted. It has a gable end roof, finished with old tiles, which is hipped over the corner where Winchester Street meets Pennyfarthing Street. Numbers 56 and 60 each have two windows on the first floor, while number 58 has one. The windows are recessed sash windows with later glazing. Number 58 has a plain plastered shop front which returns for one bay onto Pennyfarthing Street, with a frieze and cornice above. To the left of the shop front is a door consisting of six fielded panels, topped with a semicircular fanlight. Number 58 also features a single ground floor window and a four-panel door with a semicircular fanlight. Number 60 features a single window to the right, a similar door, and a pair of double doors to the left. Earlier brickwork and the base of a chimney stack are visible at the rear. The buildings at numbers 56 to 60 are part of a group with numbers 2 to 14 on Guilder Lane.
