Description

The Box and Ditteridge War Memorial is located at the center of a small garden at the junction of the Bath Road (A4) and the Devizes Road (A365). The garden is surrounded by a stone wall with pillars on the north and east sides, and posts at street level on the south side that support spiked chains. The memorial is made from local limestone.

It features a very tall octagonal cross that stands on an elaborate two-stage plinth with an octagonal three-stepped base. The foot of the cross shaft is heavily moulded and rests on the upper stage, which is a square corniced pedestal with volutes at the corners. The lower stage is octagonal and also corniced, displaying eight inset limestone panels that list the names of those commemorated. Two of these panels still have their original incised inscriptions, while the other six were replaced in or after 1936 due to weather damage to the originals.

The main dedicatory inscription on the western panel states: "ERECTED A.D. 1920, BY PUBLIC/ SUBSCRIPTION./ IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN FROM BOX AND DITTERIDGE,/ WHO DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-18,/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM/ AT THE CALL OF DUTY,/ TO ENDURE HARDSHIP, TO FACE DANGER,/ AND GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THE FREEDOM OF THE WORLD."

Additionally, there is an inscription around the foot of the cross shaft that reads: "THEIR/ NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR/ EVERMORE."

On the upper stage of the plinth, three bronze panels commemorate the 18 parishioners who died during the Second World War.
