Description

The farmyard buildings at Lanhill Farm, constructed around 1845 by J. Thomson for J. Neeld of Grittleton House, are estate farm and stable buildings. They are built from coursed rubble stone and feature stone-tiled roofs. The layout is a reversed F-plan, with the main court open to the west. This court has low ranges to the north and south, both with roofs hipped to the west end.

The northern range, which includes stabling, has two gabled cart entrances with dove openings above, leading to a large nine-bay barn that has half-hipped gables. The barn features cambered stone inner arches at the south cart entries, plain timber lintels at the north entries, and king post roof trusses with angle struts. An ashlar stack is located on the east wall.

The east range of the court, which is obscured by a modern barn, consists of a seven-bay open cartshed supported by circular piers. The south range opens to a secondary court and includes a thirteen-bay stall range that was converted in the 20th century to a stable range, with circular piers between the stalls. The central eleven bays have a roof that is lifted higher on extended piers. Finally, the east side of this court features a range of four stables with a roof hipped at the south end.
