Description
The Old Vicarage is a former rectory built in 1841 by G. Salway of Chippenham. It is constructed of squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof, coped gables, and parapets. The building has two storeys and an attic, designed in an L-plan with tall proportions. It has a raised plinth, a band, a moulded cornice, and flush quoins.
The south front includes a two-window range to the left with a rear stack, and a slightly advanced cross wing gable to the right, which has a coped shouldered gable and a finial. The band and cornice extend around the building. The cross wing features 16-pane sashes on each floor within flush surrounds, and a smaller 16-pane sash in the attic. The left range has 16-pane and 12-pane sashes above, with a 16-pane sash and a half-glazed door below. The door is set in an ashlar enclosed porch with double doors in a plain raised surround, along with a cornice and parapet.
The cross wing has ridge and north end stacks. Originally, the east side had a three-window range of sashes, with a 12-pane sash in the centre and 16-pane sashes on each side, but the left sashes have been replaced by a large shallow square bay with a 16-pane sash, cornice, and shouldered gable. Plans for the house dated 1839 are held at the Wiltshire Record Office, indicating that the cross wing was originally on the left rather than the right. The building was constructed for a cost of £1,281 and 16 shillings and 10 pence. Canon F. Goddard noted alterations made in 1858-1859 by H. Weaver, most of which have since been removed.
