Description

The Duke Inn is an inn built around 1850-1860, constructed from squared rubble stone and featuring a slate eaves roof with decorative barge boards. The building is two storeys high and has a cross wing to the south, which is gabled on the east front. The main range has twin roofs with paired gables facing north. The windows are made of stone mullions and have hoodmoulds, with 20th-century leaded lights.

The cross wing includes a ridge stack and has a three-light window on the east front on each floor. The main range's east front is set back and features an ashlar projecting porch at the angle, with a small two-light window under the eaves above, a three-light window to the ground floor on the right, and a two-light window above, breaking the eaves under the barge boarded gable. The porch is made of ashlar and has diagonal buttresses, a Tudor-arched door with a hoodmould, and a Jacobean-style shaped gable that includes a portrait relief profile of the Duke of Wellington. The hoodmould extends around the north side under a parapet.

On the north side, there are two lancet windows and a buttress between them. Each of the north gables has a two-light window on the first floor, while the ground floor features a two-light window to the left, a three-light window off-centre, and a slate-roofed porch to the right with an ashlar Tudor-arched entry on the east side. A large stack is located in the roof valley. The south side of the cross wing has a gable to the left, a small dormer gable in the centre, and a side-wall stack to the right. There is also a slightly lower one-window section at the west end, which has a west stack and a south dormer gable.
