Description

The Court House is a house that dates from the 15th to 16th centuries, with a later addition around 1840. It is situated on the site of the Manor of the Bishops of Salisbury. The building is constructed of rendered brick and has a slate roof, with an extension to the north featuring flint and brick chequerwork on one bay, which is separately roofed.

The main block, added around 1840, consists of four bays and is parallel to an earlier block that likely dates from after the demolition of the manor between 1535 and 1539. The front block has a shaped gable over the two central bays that conceals the chimneys. The entrance is located in the second bay and features a six-panelled door within a porch made of rusticated stone gate piers and a semi-circular canopy with a stepped keyblock. The windows are twelve-paned sashes, with tripartite windows in the first bay on both floors.

The rear elevation is symmetrical and dates from the 18th century, consisting of five bays with a central raised entrance and twelve-paned sash windows, topped with a tiled roof. Inside, much of the earlier work is now concealed, but there is a cusped blind trefoiled arch of medieval origin and a rose boss reset in the walls. The drawing room features an eared architrave around the fireplace and a mid-18th century cornice.
