Description

The Chequers Inn is an inn dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is built from rubble stone and features a stone tiled roof with coped gables at the east end wall and ridge stacks. The building is one and a half storeys high and has four coped dormer gables, with two larger ones on the left. Originally, all dormers had 2-light ovolo-moulded recessed mullion windows, but one has had its mullion removed and now features an early 19th-century 20-pane small sash window. Each dormer has hoodmoulds above.

On the ground floor, from the left, there is a 3-light ovolo-moulded recessed mullion window with a dripstone, followed by a 19th-century door in a chamfered surround. Next is an early 19th-century large canted bay made of ashlar, which has a moulded cornice, raised sill course, and plinth. The bay features 12-pane sash windows on the sides with shutters and a 16-pane sash window in the center. There is also a 19th-century door in a moulded doorcase and a 20th-century 3-light casement, both located under a broad timber hood that extends to the right from the bay window.

At the east end, there is an outbuilding with a cellar door. The west end wall has an upper mullion window that has been replaced by a 16-pane sash, and the ground floor features a 2-light ovolo-moulded window, both with hoodmoulds. The building has a parallel rear range gabled to the west and a pair of outbuildings to the north, which includes a south end stack and coped gables.

Inside, there is a west end moulded Tudor-arched fireplace with a moulded stone shelf and a chamfered and stopped spine beam.
